Scam channels on Telegram and Discord
Messaging platforms carry a large share of impersonation and fraud, and they work nothing like a social network. What can be removed, and how.
A growing share of fraud never touches a website. It runs in group chats: a channel using your logo, an "official support" account answering anyone who tags your brand, a server selling access to something you make. These differ from a fake web page in one way that changes everything about handling them.
No public index
A phishing site can be crawled, scanned and reported by anyone who finds it. A private channel cannot. You usually learn about one because a customer forwards a message, which means that by the time you know, it has been running for a while and has an audience.
It also changes evidence collection. There is no URL to scan and no WHOIS record. What you have is an invite link, a channel or server ID, and screenshots from someone who was inside.
What these platforms will act on
Both Telegram and Discord remove content that breaks their terms, but the categories they move on quickly are narrower than brands expect.
- Brand impersonation where a channel presents itself as your official presence. This works, and it works better when you can point at your real one.
- Distribution of stolen or paywalled material. A copyright claim is the strongest lever on both platforms.
- Fraud and financial scams, especially where people can be shown to have lost money.
- Trademark use in a channel or server name.
What they act on slowly or not at all: criticism, unofficial fan communities, and anything that reads as a commercial dispute between two parties.
What to collect
- The invite link and the channel or server ID. The ID survives renames. The invite link often does not.
- The name and description, showing the impersonated branding.
- Screenshots of the scam operating: the pitch, the payment request, the wallet address or account number.
- Accounts from affected people, in their own words, with dates.
- Your own official channel, to show which is real.
Capture the payment details carefully. The same wallet or account tends to recur across several channels, and that is what turns six separate reports into one case about one operator.
Realistic expectations
Removal here is genuinely harder than on a social network, and anyone promising a same-day result is guessing. Channels rebuild quickly, often announcing the new address before the old one goes down, so a single removal buys less time than it would elsewhere.
What helps is doing it repeatedly, documenting the pattern, and giving your audience one place to verify what is official. Most of the damage from an impersonating channel lands on people who had no way to check.
